REF FM Foundation initiated the first REF FM rado station in 2020 in Kalobeyei-Kakuma, an area in the far north of Kenya with nearly 200,000 refugees. The African led and African focused NGO AAH-Int is the owner of the station. But the station is rum by and for refugees and host community members.
Refugees in Malawi have started their own community radio station, Yetu. REF FM Foundation is exploring opportunities to collaborate with them. Yetu Community Radio, officially launched in August 2018, aims to create a social coexistence between refugees and host communities through its programs.
Bangladesh hosts about 1 million Rohingya refugees from neighbouring Myanmar. REF FM Foundation aims to provoide them with their own REF FM radio station on Basan Char, an island just off the coast
Uganda hosts over one million refugees . The country has a relatively progessive policy towards refugees. REF FM Foundation is exploring opportunities with UNHCR to start a REF FM radio station in BidiBidi, the biggest refugee camp in the country. And with Action Africa Help International REF FM is working on the establishment of a REF FM radio station in Kyangwali Refuge Camp, alongside the border with DR Congo.
Zaatari Refugee Camp is the biggest camp for Syrian refugees, situated in Jordan. REF FM Foundation and the Community Media Network in Jordan, are developing plans to start a REF FM radio station near the camp, REF FM Mafraq.
Ukerewe Island in Lake Victoria has been the refuge for many albinos. REF FM Foundation is exploring opportunities to start a REF FM station on the island, in the Albino Centre, together with the Africa Afya Initiative.
In Rwanda REF FM Foundation is working together with singer, record label holder, radio station owner and activist-entrepreneur Jean Paul on a REF FM radio station in Mahama, the biggest refugee camp in the country.
In Chad REF FM Foundation and UNHCR want to start a REF FM radio station in three refugee camps near the border with the Central African Republic.
In Ethiopia REF FM Foundation is working together with South Sudanese refugee and preacher Mathew Jock Moses and with Ethiopian consultant Solomon Hussein on a REF FM radio station in Tierkidi Refugee Camp, near the border with South Sudan.
